Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What's the difference between a gate valve and a ball valve?
A: Gate valves use a sliding gate and are designed for fully open or fully closed service. Ball valves use a rotating ball with a quarter turn — they're faster to operate and more common in modern fuel system installations.
Q: Do I need special materials for fuel system valves?
A: Yes — valves must be compatible with the fuel type being handled. For most petroleum applications, brass, steel, or stainless steel with appropriate seals are standard. For DEF systems, stainless steel or polypropylene is required.
Q: What is an anti-siphon valve?
A: An anti-siphon valve prevents fuel from being siphoned out of a tank through the suction line when the pump is not running. They're a common code requirement on above ground fuel storage installations.
Q: How do I know what size valve or fitting I need?
A: Valves and fittings are sized by pipe connection size, typically in inches (1", 1-1/2", 2", etc.). Measure your existing pipe or connection and match the thread type (NPT is most common in fuel systems).
