When filtering fluid from an old or dirty tank, the tank itself may become a source of contamination. Over time, without proper cleaning and maintenance, tanks can breed microbial growth and become contaminated with rust and other particulate matter. If the tank is not maintained, it will become difficult to maintain the quality of the fluid.

The Tank Cleaning Unit includes sight glass to see the fluid during the process, a Alfa-Laval Gamajet spray nozzle, and a 3-way valve to direct flow to the nozzle or the filtration tanks. The spray nozzle covers the entire surface of the tank with fluid so that every interior surface is cleaned.

These units are used for tank cleaning and have additional features from a standard filter system for this specialized purpose. In addition to the standard filter unit they are outfitted with sight glasses to visually see the cleanliness of the fluid being circulated and a 3-way valve to divert fluid flow from the secondary filter housing.

Depending on the specific circumstances it is normally desirable to have about 10% of the fluid left remaining in the tank to be used as the media for the actual tank cleaning process. After the tank washing cycle is over complete removal of all the fluid from the tank is normally required. The removed fuel can often be returned and basic fuel filtration can then be completed.
