DEF Equipment & Dispensing Setup Guide

What DEF Is and Why It Matters

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a solution of urea and deionized water that is injected into the exhaust stream of diesel engines to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. Every diesel truck and piece of heavy equipment manufactured since 2010 uses DEF. The engine will derate — reduce power and eventually stop running — if the DEF tank runs empty.

Every fleet, construction company, and agricultural operation running modern diesel equipment needs a reliable DEF supply and dispensing setup.

DEF Storage and Handling Requirements

DEF is not fuel and cannot be stored or handled like fuel. Every component that touches DEF must be compatible — stainless steel, HDPE, or other DEF-rated materials. DEF corrodes carbon steel, aluminum, copper, and brass.

Temperature: DEF freezes at 12 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold climate operations need heated storage or insulated tanks. DEF expands when it freezes, so tanks need room for expansion.

Contamination: Even small amounts of dirt or other fluids will ruin a batch and can damage the vehicle's SCR system. Use dedicated DEF-only equipment.

Shelf life: DEF lasts about 12 months when stored properly below 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dispensing Equipment by Scale

Drum and Tote Systems (Small to Mid-Size Operations)

For operations with a handful of trucks or equipment, a pump system mounted on a 55-gallon drum or 275/330-gallon tote is the simplest starting point.

TOPS T-ADBLUE KIT: A heavy-duty DEF dispensing system that we stock. Includes pump, meter, hose, and nozzle as a complete package.

Piusi SuzzaraBlue Tote Kits: Available in Basic, Basic+, Pro, and Pro+ configurations for IBC totes. The Basic kit provides the essentials while Pro kits add meters and automatic nozzles.

Sotera DEF Pump Systems (by Fill-Rite): Available in 12V DC and 120V AC configurations. Models range from basic pump-only (DF012N, DF120N) to complete systems with automatic nozzles and digital meters (DF120CAN520, DF120DAN520).

Balcrank DEF Equipment: Complete line of DEF hose reels (2400-006), couplers, suction kits, and accessories for both DQP and RSV connector systems. Balcrank carries DEF-compatible hoses, fittings, and filtration.

TOPS DEF Hand Pump: The T-FDP320 is a manual option for low-volume applications where electric or air power is not available.

Bulk Storage and Dispensing (Large Fleets)

For high-volume operations, dedicated DEF tanks with integrated dispensing systems provide the most efficient solution.

TOPS DEF Tuff Tanks: Stackable DEF storage tanks available in multiple sizes for bulk storage.

Piusi THREE25 Dispensers: Commercial-grade DEF dispensing kits available in multiple configurations for fleet yards and maintenance facilities.

Piusi Portable Tanks: Self-contained portable DEF tank systems with integrated pumps for operations that need mobile bulk dispensing.

Above Ground Fuel Storage Tanks

When You Need Above Ground Storage

Above ground fuel storage tanks are for operations that go through enough fuel that transfer tanks and portable containers no longer make sense. If you are refueling a fleet every day, running heavy equipment on a long-term construction site, or operating a fueling station for farm equipment, a permanent or semi-permanent above ground tank is the practical solution.

Single-Wall vs. Double-Wall Tanks

Single-Wall Tanks: One layer of steel. Less expensive upfront but typically require a separate secondary containment structure — a concrete pad with a dike or a containment basin — to meet environmental regulations. TOPS carries single-wall fuel tanks (LC-SW series) from 60 gallons up to 5,000 gallons.

Double-Wall Tanks: Built-in secondary containment. The inner tank holds the fuel and the outer wall acts as the containment barrier. These meet most federal and state secondary containment requirements without needing additional site construction. TOPS double-wall tanks (LC-DW series) and double-wall cube tanks (DW-CT series) are available. Containment Solutions also manufactures double-wall above ground steel tanks for oil/water separator applications.

Underground Fiberglass Tanks

For permanent installations, Containment Solutions manufactures underground fiberglass petroleum tanks from 600 to 40,000 gallons. Fiberglass construction eliminates the corrosion concerns that affect buried steel tanks. We carry Containment Solutions underground tanks for petroleum, fire protection water, and potable water applications.

Farm Tanks

For agricultural operations, TOPS carries above ground farm tanks in 300 and 500 gallon sizes. These are designed for on-farm fuel storage and dispensing.

Generator and Day Tanks

For standby generator installations, Containment Solutions Gen Cube tanks provide UL Listed fuel storage. We also carry generator day tanks and sub-base tanks from Tramont.

Regulatory Considerations

Any above ground fuel tank over 1,320 gallons (or a facility with total storage over 1,320 gallons) falls under EPA SPCC regulations and requires a Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure plan. Many states have additional requirements that kick in at lower thresholds.

Double-wall tanks simplify compliance because the secondary containment is built in. If you are installing at a commercial or industrial site, check your local fire code requirements before purchasing.

What Westech Carries

We carry above ground and underground fuel storage tanks from TOPS and Containment Solutions. TOPS carries single-wall and double-wall steel fuel tanks from 60 to 5,000 gallons, cube tanks, and farm tanks. Containment Solutions carries underground fiberglass tanks, above ground oil/water separator tanks, and Gen Cube generator tanks. We also carry the full range of tank equipment — valves, vents, fill caps, overfill prevention, gauges, and spill containment — from OPW, Morrison Bros., and Clay & Bailey.

Call us at 1-800-433-8831 for help sizing and specifying the right tank for your operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need a single-wall or double-wall tank?
A: Double-wall tanks provide built-in secondary containment and meet most regulatory requirements without a separate containment basin. Single-wall tanks are less expensive but typically require additional containment construction. Check your local fire code.

Q: What sizes are available?
A: TOPS single-wall and double-wall tanks range from 60 to 5,000 gallons. Farm tanks are available at 300 and 500 gallons. Underground fiberglass tanks from Containment Solutions range from 600 to 40,000 gallons.

Q: What tank equipment do I need for a new installation?
A: At minimum you need fill caps or adapters, a vent, an emergency shutoff valve, a tank gauge, overfill prevention, and spill containment. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and tank size. Browse our Tank Equipment category or call us for a complete equipment list.

Grease Guns & Lubrication Equipment Guide

Types of Grease Guns

We carry over 70 grease gun products from Lincoln, Alemite, Balcrank, and ZeeLine. The right type depends on your application, how much greasing you do, and whether you have shop air available.

Manual Lever-Action Grease Guns

The most common type. Squeeze the lever and it pushes grease through the fitting. Simple, reliable, and the most affordable option. Standard operating pressure is around 3,000-6,000 PSI. These handle routine maintenance on trucks, trailers, farm equipment, and light machinery.

Available from Lincoln (1142, 1147, 1148, 1151 series), Alemite (500-L, 500CLR, 1056 series), and Balcrank (5200-006, 5200-016).

Pistol-Grip Grease Guns

One-handed operation for tight spaces where a two-handed lever gun will not fit. Same pressure range as lever-action but easier to control in awkward positions.

Available from Lincoln (1132, 1133, 1134) and Alemite (555CLR series).

High-Pressure Grease Guns

Built for applications that require more force than standard guns can deliver. Heavy equipment, mining machinery, and large industrial bearings often need grease delivered at pressures well above standard to push through long lines or packed fittings.

Alemite offers multiple high-pressure models including the 325540 series, 6268, and 6320. Lincoln's 1035 and 1037 are precision high-pressure and high-volume guns.

Battery-Powered Grease Guns

Eliminate manual pumping entirely. Ideal for anyone doing high-volume greasing or working in locations without shop air.

Lincoln PowerLuber grease guns are available in 12V (1260, 1262, 1264), 20V (1880, 1882, 1884, 1886, 1888), and 120V AC (AC2400, AC2440). ZeeLine carries a 20V cordless model (ZE912-20) and a 19.2V kit (ZE912-19L). Balcrank offers a battery-operated model (5200-015). Replacement batteries and chargers are available for all lines.

Air-Operated Grease Guns

Connect to shop air for continuous grease flow without batteries or manual pumping. Fastest and least fatiguing option for shop environments.

Available from Lincoln (1162 Air Operated PowerLuber), Alemite (F100 Pneumatic Grease Gun), Balcrank (5200-010, 5200-025), and ZeeLine (ZE911, ZE915 Dual Mode).

Extra-Long and Specialty Grease Guns

Alemite's 6243 and 6679 series are extra-long lever-action guns for reaching fittings that standard guns cannot access. Available with rigid extensions or flexible hoses. The C600 is a screw-type gun for controlled, low-volume dispensing.

Grease Gun Accessories

We carry grease gun accessories including couplers, extensions, and hoses. Call us at 1-800-433-8831 to confirm compatibility with your specific grease gun model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between a lever-action and pistol-grip grease gun?
A: Lever-action guns use two hands and are the most common type. Pistol-grip guns operate with one hand, which is useful in tight spaces. Both deliver similar pressure.

Q: When do I need a high-pressure grease gun?
A: When standard guns (3,000-6,000 PSI) cannot push grease through long lines or packed fittings. Heavy equipment, mining, and industrial applications often require high-pressure guns.

Q: What brands of grease guns do you carry?
A: Lincoln, Alemite, Balcrank, and ZeeLine. Over 70 models from manual to battery-powered to air-operated.

Q: Do you carry replacement batteries for PowerLuber grease guns?
A: Yes. We carry 12V (1261), 18V (1861), and 20V (1871, 1872) batteries and chargers (1870, 1875A) for Lincoln PowerLuber grease guns.

How to Choose the Right Transfer Tank

Choosing the Right Size

Picking a transfer tank comes down to how much fuel you need to move, how often you need to refuel, and what vehicle you are mounting it in. Getting the size right means you are not making extra trips and you are not hauling more weight than you need to.

We carry transfer tanks in a wide range of sizes. The most common are 50, 80, 90, 98, 100, 110, 150, and 200 gallon capacities, but we also carry sizes in between including 36, 55, 60, 72, 75, and 96 gallon options.

50-Gallon Tanks: Best for light-duty use. If you are topping off a couple of pieces of equipment on a small job site or keeping a backup supply in the bed of a pickup, 50 gallons is usually enough. Available in aluminum and steel, vertical and rectangular configurations.

80-100 Gallon Tanks: The most popular range for contractors and fleet operators. A 100-gallon tank paired with a 12V pump gives you a self-contained refueling setup that handles a full day of equipment operation. Available in rectangular and L-shaped configurations. L-shaped tanks fit against the cab and leave bed space open for tools and materials.

150-200 Gallon Tanks: Built for high-consumption operations. If you are running multiple machines, a 200-gallon tank means your fuel supply keeps up with your crew. These typically require a three-quarter-ton or one-ton truck. A full 200-gallon diesel tank adds approximately 1,400 pounds.

Tank Material and Shape

Transfer tanks are available in aluminum and steel. Aluminum is lighter and corrosion-resistant, which matters if you are frequently loading and unloading the tank or working in wet conditions. Steel is heavier but typically less expensive and more durable in high-impact environments.

Rectangular tanks sit flat in the bed and maximize capacity for the footprint. They work best when the tank is the primary cargo.

L-shaped tanks fit against the front of the bed and one side, leaving open bed space for tools and materials. This is the most popular configuration for contractors who need both fuel capacity and cargo room. We carry L-shaped tanks from 50 gallons up to 110 gallons.

Vertical tanks are compact and work well in shorter beds. Available in 36 and 50 gallon sizes.

Pump Packages

We sell transfer tanks individually and as pump packages. Our packages are more of a build-your-own setup where you choose your tank, pump, and accessories. In addition to the pump, hose, and nozzle, packages can include filters, meters, and adapters depending on your application. All pumps use 12V DC power from your truck battery.

8 GPM pumps: Entry-level option for diesel-only applications. Good for occasional refueling where speed is not the priority.

15 GPM pumps: The standard for most applications. Handles gasoline, diesel, and kerosene. UL Listed.

20 GPM pumps: Fastest option for fleet operations where you are refueling multiple machines per stop.

DOT Compliance

If you are transporting diesel on public roads, DOT regulations apply. Tanks over 119 gallons that travel on highways may require DOT certification, placarding, and a hazmat endorsement depending on your state. Check with your state DOT or a compliance specialist before purchasing if you plan to transport fuel on public roads.

What Westech Carries

We carry over 260 transfer tank products from Better Built, Weather Guard, and TOPS in aluminum and steel, rectangular, L-shaped, and vertical configurations. Pump packages are available with Fill-Rite, GPI, TOPS, and Piusi pumps. Sizes range from 36 gallons up to 200 gallons.

If you need help choosing the right setup for your operation, call us at 1-800-433-8831. We can match the tank size, pump type, and accessories to your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What comes in a transfer tank pump package?
A: Each package includes the transfer tank, a 12V DC transfer pump, fuel hose, and nozzle. Everything is matched and ready to install.

Q: What size tank is most popular?
A: The 100-gallon range is our most popular for contractors and fleet operators. It balances capacity with payload for most trucks.

Q: Can I buy a tank without a pump?
A: Yes. We carry individual transfer tanks without pumps. The pump packages are a convenience option that bundles everything together.

Q: Aluminum or steel?
A: Aluminum is lighter and will not rust. Steel is heavier, more impact-resistant, and typically less expensive. Both are available in most sizes and configurations.
